Like other osteostracans,
Levesquaspis patteni had a head shield consisting of a mosaic of tiny plates, although the edges of these platelets are not always discernible.
(36 kb) L. pattenti is a rare and relatively small species. And, unique among osteostracans, it lacks the lateral sensory fields normally found in its group, an observation that helped confirm it as a new species. From head to tail, the species reached only about 15 cm in length.
Levesquaspis is distinguished from Escuminaspis by its parabola-shaped head shield.
(88 kb)The name of the genus pays tribute to René Lévesque and Gérard D. Lévesque, two Quebec politicians of Gaspesian origin.
